Seven Stunning Waterfalls in the Finger Lakes

Published: July 12, 2026

The Finger Lakes region of New York is one of the most waterfall-rich areas in the eastern United States, and it’s no accident. Thousands of years ago, retreating glaciers carved deep, steep-sided valleys into the region’s layered shale and limestone bedrock, leaving behind long, narrow lakes and hanging tributary streams that now have to drop dramatically to reach the valley floors. That combination of soft, easily eroded rock and sudden elevation change is what creates so many waterfalls, gorges, and glens in such a small area. For visitors staying at Vineyard Villas near Burdett, this means some of the best waterfall hiking in the Northeast is just a short drive away.

Key takeaways:

  • Hector Falls is a massive, 250-foot multi-tiered cascade visible from Route 414, with the full falls best seen by boat.
  • Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet in one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in the Northeast, viewable from an overlook or an easy gorge trail.
  • Excelsior Glen Waterfalls offers five wild, undeveloped falls including the 100+ foot Excelsior Falls, reached via a moderately strenuous hike.
  • Watkins Glen State Park features 19 waterfalls along a 1.5-mile gorge trail that winds through tunnels and beneath cascades.
  • SheQuaGa Falls is a 156-foot cascade in the village of Montour Falls, easily viewed from the road or a short walk.
  • Aunt Sarah’s Falls shows a visible 90-foot drop right along Route 14, free and easy to view.
  • Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park, is a 41-foot plunge reached by a short, easy 0.2-mile hike.

Hector Falls

Just about 7 minutes from Vineyard Villas by car, Hector Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the area simply because of its scale. The falls tumble over a broad expanse of shale and limestone as they descend toward Seneca Lake, but only the upper third, about 50 feet, is visible from Route 414 or the creek bed. The lower sections cross private property and can only be seen from the water. When you add up the full sequence of cascading drops, Hector Falls totals more than 250 feet, making it far taller than the commonly cited 165-foot figure suggests.

To reach it, head south on NY-414 along the east side of Seneca Lake for 4.7 miles until you cross a bridge; park carefully on the shoulder before or after the bridge to view the falls. For the complete picture, consider a boat tour with Captain Bill’s Seneca Lake Cruises or the True Love Schooner.

Taughannock Falls

About 25 to 30 minutes from Vineyard Villas, Taughannock Falls State Park is home to one of the standout natural landmarks of the Northeast. The falls drop 215 feet past cliffs that rise nearly 400 feet above the gorge.

You can drive to the Taughannock Falls Overlook Visitor Center for sweeping views right from the parking area, or walk the gentle, under-one-mile Gorge Trail for a closer look and, if conditions are right, a light mist from the falls themselves. There is also a parking lot near Cayuga Lake. From there, hikers can take the half-mile Cataract Trail along Taughannock Creek to get close to the falls. There’s a $10 vehicle entrance fee, and the park is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

Excelsior Glen Waterfalls

Located about 10 minutes from Vineyard Villas, Excelsior Glen is a lesser-known gem tucked just north of Watkins Glen along NY-414. This glen contains five waterfalls ranging from 8 to over 100 feet, including the three-tiered Excelsior Falls and the 32-foot Emerald Falls. What sets this hike apart is its untamed character, offering a quieter alternative to the more crowded trails nearby.

Depending on your route, plan for one to two hours, and expect a moderately strenuous hike along the Finger Lakes Trail or a more difficult creek-walking route directly up the gorge. Parking is available near the trailhead or in a larger lot across from Cass Road.

Watkins Glen State Park

Roughly 15 minutes from Vineyard Villas, Watkins Glen State Park is the crown jewel of Finger Lakes waterfall hikes. Its Gorge Trail winds 1.5 miles past 19 waterfalls as Glen Creek drops 400 feet between cliffs 200 feet high. The trail passes through carved tunnels and beneath two waterfalls, including the misty Cavern Cascade.

A $10 vehicle fee applies, and the trail typically opens in early May and closes in mid-October. A shuttle service runs between parking areas for those who prefer a one-way hike, and while there is a 500-foot elevation change, frequent photo stops tend to make the climb feel manageable.

SheQuaGa Falls

About 20 minutes from Vineyard Villas in the village of Montour Falls, SheQuaGa Falls delivers a dramatic surprise right in the middle of town. This 156-foot cascade can be reached by taking NY-14 to Montour Falls and turning west onto W Main Street, with roadside parking along Genesee Street. A paved walkway leads to the base of the falls in under five minutes, and the falls are illuminated at night, making it a great option for an evening visit.

Aunt Sarah’s Falls

Also about 20 minutes from Vineyard Villas, Aunt Sarah’s Falls sits along Route 14 just before Montour Falls. While the full gorge extends several hundred feet, the visible portion is a 90-foot drop easily seen from the road, with a parking area directly across from it. It’s free to view and, though flow can be light at times, it remains easy to spot for anyone driving by.

Eagle Cliff Falls

Rounding out the list, Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park is about 20 minutes from Vineyard Villas. This 41-foot waterfall drops into a nearly enclosed rock amphitheater and is reached via a short, easy 0.2-mile hike from the parking lot, with a few stairs along the way. A $3 parking fee applies, and several smaller cascades line the trail on the way to the main falls.

With seven waterfalls this varied and this close together, the Banana Belt of Seneca Creek offers something for every kind of traveler, whether you want a quick roadside view or a full day of gorge hiking. If you’re lucky, a local might tell you about some of the secret hidden falls near the villas. Pack your hiking shoes, bring a camera, and set out from Vineyard Villas to experience the Finger Lakes’ waterfalls for yourself.
